On Sept. 8, during the Kansas City Chiefs annual kick-off luncheon, first-year head coach Todd Haley proclaimed:

“I want to thank the Hunt family and Scott for giving me the opportunity to coach this great franchise, and I want everybody here to know that, next to God and my family, winning is all that I care about. You have my word on that.”

Coach Haley reiterated those words during his post-game press conference after last Sunday’s unbelievable win over the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. I truly believe this win denotes a defining moment for Scott Pioli, Todd Haley and the future of this franchise. I wish fans would demonstrate a little patience and soften their criticism of Pioli and Haley. It’s only year one and every day is an evaluation of these players. They inherited this team and are quickly trying to eradicate years of losing and failed draft selections. The unconventional free agent signings they’ve made during the season doesn’t bother me at all. It just reinforces their intentions of making the Chiefs a better team and taking them to the next level.

The offensive line and wide receiver additions (Andy Alleman, Ryan O’Callaghan and Chris Chambers) have proven to be good moves. Alleman, O’Callaghan and the rest of the offensive line seem to be meshing rather well, and Chambers (20 yards/per catch and three touchdowns in three games) has quickly become Matt Cassel’s favorite target. I really like Bobby Wade and Lance Long too. All of these transactions simply reflect their experience in spotting talent, assembling a competitive team, and, ultimately, sustaining a successful franchise.

Relax, fans. The Chiefs are in good hands.
